What is Fleet Week?
Fleet Week is a beloved tradition in San Francisco, dating back to 1981. The celebration first began as a natural extension of the annual arrival of U.S. Navy ships that would dock in SF every October. Now, it’s a week-long celebration that honors the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces. The event features various activities, including ship tours, air shows, parades, live concerts, educational exhibits and even a career fair. It's a chance for the public to get up close and personal with military personnel and equipment, and to appreciate the sacrifices they make to protect our country. Today, more than one million people attend Fleet Week every year!
What to Expect
Fleet Week offers something for everyone, regardless of age or interests. Here are some of the highlights you can expect to experience:
- Ship Tours: Board Navy and Coast Guard ships to explore their interiors, learn about their capabilities, and meet the sailors who call them home.
- Air Shows: Witness breathtaking aerial displays by the Navy’s Blue Angels and other military aircraft as they fly over The Bay.
- Parades: Cheer on marching bands, military units, and community organizations as they parade through the city streets.
- Educational Exhibits: Learn about the history and technology of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard through interactive exhibits and demonstrations.

What’s All That Noise?!
Fleet Week also brings with it increased air traffic and noise to the Bay Area as the aircraft fly in, out and all over San Francisco. The Blue Angels – the longest-running flight demonstration squadron in the United States consisting of some of the most elite pilots from both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines – will begin their practicing earlier in the week in preparation of their Air Shows. You should brace for high noise levels during takeoffs, landing and demonstrations. Please be aware, the sudden loud noises from the jet roars may cause stress for cats, dogs and other animal companions! It is recommended to leave your pets at home in a safe, quite space if possible.
